Like a friendly slap across the face, it is time the harsh truth surrounding some of Men’s Fashion’s Biggest Myths, came out. You may have heard them from a friend, your parents, any relative or may have even read it in an article or you might have seen those pretty ladies gossiping about the Man in Pink. Chances of it being used by you yourself. 😀

From “not wearing denim on denim” to the most common one anyone would’ve heard, “real men don’t wear pink”. These myths need to be left behind and cannot be validated in 21st century which people need to understand and need to be eradicated right away.

1. First and foremost, Real men don’t wear pink

A guy wouldn’t know a thing about Fashion but this line, whoever he might have heard from, would certainly say it to the one who really wears this color. An outfit maketh a man, yes, but this does not mean that pink would make you any less man, rather it actually accentuates your masculinity!. Pink is a fantastic color and goes well with most types and colors of trousers. Trust your imagination and carry the color with aplomb.

I can’t blame baby girls for starting this color separation at such a young age, but men need to realize that it is far from taboo to wear a little pink. Pink doesn’t make you stink; poor hygiene sure does! Now that’s settled, pink is the ultimate spring color and should be embraced.

2.  “Made in America” or “Made in Italy” is the best

These myths exist even before the beginning of World War I.  The time when Europe and America were the leaders. Since then the global production of garments from here is considered “royal”, most people instantly shrug off anything that is made in Asia (well it is okay to throw off a Made in China :D) as they are considered as lesser quality—claiming that pieces with American and Italian origins are of superior quality and better. Yes, they do have a good Fabric, quality and all that but this does not mean that Made in Japan or Made in France is any lesser. I would say country of origin is not thee deciding factor in the quality of a garment. Of course, if it’s mass produced in a factory, that garment wouldn’t be as good as the handmade of Italian leather shoes but the quality of an item would be at par.

 

3. You don’t wear denim-on-denim

“Whenever I see someone doing denim-on-denim right, I feel a quiet pang of jealousy”, once said a friend of mine. Double denim can be done, of course! Agreed that it is one look that can easily go wrong. Look at the brighter side, as it looks super cool only if you pull it off correctly. The key is to achieve a contrast between the shirt or jacket and the jeans, both in terms of color and texture. For instance -pair a dark- pair of jeans with a little lighter chambray jacket just like David Beckham in the picture. This looks effortlessly cool and chic. This fad is not for a fashion novice, but it is no rocket science either. Wear it with confidence, trust your eye and believe that you can work this look!

4. It’s cool to wear sunglasses indoors.

I have seen so many people wearing sunglasses indoors (at airports, in cinemas etc) and night parties. I don’t understand what exactly is the need of sunglasses where/when there is No SUN! Sunglasses are meant for the beach, and other places where there is sun.  I hear people saying, “He’s a star, it doesn’t really matter what they wear.”, or, “Anything and Everything suits them.” Wrong! Just because they are stars it does not mean that whatever they wear is legit and should be practiced by everyone.

Sunglasses are stylish accessories, correct. But, they shouldn’t be worn indoors and on a non-sunny day. That is my opinion. You can even wear sunglasses when you go to sleep but that is totally up to you. xD If you really want to wear those sunglasses even on a gloomy winter’s day, just be sure to select restrained, classic styles rather than brightly colored frames.

5. It does not matter if you wear Similar shade belt and shoes

It is wrong when those people say that you can wear any belt with any shoes. Well I would say they should be of the same color family – i.e. brown or black, but need not be matched entirely. If you’re not sure of what to wear, always incline towards the darker side. A black belt will go well with almost anything; the same rule applies for a navy blue belt. Alternatively, a tanned belt, for example, when paired with dark brown shoes adds nice twist to your look. Matching shoes and belts in the same color is the best way to dress. Though it doesn’t need to be exact. A barely noticeable tone difference in say, the tan of your belt and shoe, gives an edge your outfit. But, going too far say, dark red-brown shoes with tanned belt will make you look sloppy.

6. It doesn’t matter how it fits as long as it looks expensive

Those rich dudes (not all obviously) you see in malls wearing expensive clothing, might it be from Armani Exchange, Louis Vuitton or any other Premium Luxury brands. They wouldn’t have slightest idea of Fashion, of how they should fit and all but what they care about is, what they buy should be branded and look expensive. I feel pity them. xD They don’t know the basic thing about Fashion that; everything begins and ends with fit. It doesn’t really matter how much your outfit cost, or what rare brands you have on, as long as the cloth fits you perfectly and matches your persona. So, if the kit does not fit you, (even if it is a million dollar kit), then just don’t wear it.

7. Always wear contrasting colors

This is one of the oldest myths and can not followed anymore. It said that only light shade shirt/t-shirt should be worn with a dark shade trousers/denim or vice-versa. Well in today’s scenario this can not be considered. As above you saw, how handsome-ly Black and blue are pulled off together, even though they seem so similar. Another such example is Brown and Black which are so often confused with  each other. Not to mention, a combination of White shirt with creme/khaki trousers can also be considered a super choice.

8. It is completely normal to pay thousands for a t-shirt

You can pay whatever you want for clothes. These days, you can get t-shirts ranging right from Rs. 200 to Rs. 50k. I do have t-shirts which cost Rs. 3k but, I certainly won’t pay Rs. 3k for a plain white t-shirt and more than a Rs. 5k for any other t-shirt for that matter, after all it is just a t-shirt. The funny part is, today’s youth is running behind the brand; the label irrespective of how the material and fabric the cloth really is. Brands don’t really matter as long as they fit you, they suit your personality and most importantly, you like it. So quit the habit of running behind them brands and try something different, try new things.

9. Men are rough, they don’t need to pamper their skin

Oldest of all the myths is this one right here which is blindly followed till date. Yes men are rough, they travel and slog a lot and therefore need more attention to their skin. You might never admit it, but just like women, men do need to pamper their skin and hair. Men today need to be groomed and well-dressed but spending too much on the products make them flinch. A well groomed, dressed gentleman will always be preferred over the shabby, unkempt man even if he’s wearing an Armani suit. The first impression is the last impression applies very effectively to this case.
